We first saw this confusing accessory when Madonna wore them to the Met Gala earlier this year and again in her Vuitton shoot. They’ve shown their face (ears?) a few times since then and now the Sartorialist spotted someone wearing them on the street. She was en route to the Louis Vuitton show in Paris which makes it a bit less confusing. The Cut covered it here and echos my sentiments exactly.
Marc Jacobs on how they came to be:
“There’s a girl who works for us, Lucy, she’s on the design team, and Adrian, one of the boys, was tying a little bit of fabric around and it reminded me of bunny. We were thinking of all these different things like can-can dancers, and I saw this piece of fabric wrapped around Lucy’s head and said, ‘Bunny ears, that’s what we need to finish this look.’ So we made all these radzimir bunny ears and that’s how it happened. I like the kind of Playboy, French coquette aspect to it.”
Herein lies the breakdown between couture, ready-to-wear and street fashion. It’s clear that though bold, couture to street style often doesn’t translate.
What do you think? Will this really catch on? Would you wear them?
